Aviation English Course

Entry Requirements:

A minimum English language level of Pre-Intermediate is required for this course (CEFR A1/B2, ICAO level 2).

Course Objectives:

To provide entrants with the necessary English language skills to operate safely and effectively in an aviation environment, and to reach the level of proficiency specified in the ICAO level 4 profile. Aviation professionals are required to reach and maintain an ICAO level 4 in order to remain operational.

Course content: 

Although the course covers a range of topics associated with the aviation industry in general, it is of particular relevance for pilots and air-traffic controllers. It concentrates on the use of plain English in non-routine and emergency situations, but also supports the standard phraseology necessary to bring authenticity to each situation.

The following non-routine/emergency situations are covered:

Runway Incursion, Bird Strike, On-board Fire, Depressurization, Extreme Weather, Medical Emergency, Technical Failure, Unlawful Interference.

Where appropriate, those situations are studied in the context of the following flight phases:

Pre-flight, Departure, Climbing & Cruising, En-route, Contact & Approach, Landing.

The content focuses on the six areas of language skill specified by ICAO. These are:

Structure, Comprehension, Fluency, Interaction, Pronunciation, Vocabulary.

Past, Present & Future Verb Tenses, Question Forms, Obligation, Ability, Possibility, Commands, Prohibition, Requests, Offers, Suggestions, Warnings, Cause & Effect, Comparison.

Comprehension, oral fluency and interaction:

Coping with noise and unclear messages, L1 Language interference, responding appropriately, Requesting clarification & confirmation, Issuing clearances, Reporting incidents.


Phonemes, Word Stress, Sentence Stress, Intonation, Pace.


Aviation-Specific Vocabulary, Word Formation, Phrasal Verbs.

The course uses a balanced blend of prescribed exercises to build confidence, and authentic material in order to expose students to real-life situations. For example, original RT clips are played where radio reception is poor and/or non-native accents degrade clarity, leading to miscommunication and/or misunderstanding.

Business English Course

Entry Requirements:

Course Objectives:

As English is now the primary language for international business communication, it is more important than ever for people working with colleagues, clients and partners from other countries to understand each other and form effective business links. The overall aim of this course is to expose students to a range of business scenarios, increasing their confidence and improving their overall ability in each of the four main skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Course content: 

Our Business English courses are tailored to specific needs, and therefore an exact curriculum cannot be stated here. However, a Grammar Level test and a Needs Analysis exercise are conducted at the beginning of the course and the results carefully studied. From these results, a course is designed to satisfy students’ needs and work on areas of common weakness, optimizing available timescales. Typically, our Business English course would include the following skills:

Conducting & contributing to meetings, giving presentations, developing business vocabulary, telephone (and conference) calls, understanding cultural diversity, negotiating, summarizing, paraphrasing, report writing, producing formal emails, letters and memos.

Basic Grammatical Structures:

Past, Present and Future Verb Tenses, Question Forms, Articles, Prepositions, Subject & Object Questions.


Industry-Specific Vocabulary, Word Formation, Phrasal Verbs, Idiomatic Speech, Key Word Transformations.

Listening Comprehension & Oral Fluency

Listening for General Understanding (gist), listening for Specific Detail, Reporting back, Paraphrasing, Using Linkers, Fillers & Discourse Markers to maintain fluency.


Formal & Informal language, the Passive form, Topic Sentences and Controlling Ideas in paragraphs, Summarizing & Paraphrasing. Writing short pieces: formal emails, letters, and memos.


Authentic material (e.g. newspaper articles) – reading for Gist, Detailed Understanding and Prediction. Analyzing ideas and offering alternative arguments.

The course uses prescribed exercises and articles, plus authentic material, in order to build confidence and expose students to real-life situations. On request, formal BULAT examination examples can be included for those students who wish to take this Cambridge ESOL examination. BULATS is the Business Language Testing System, which is a bench-marking system widely recognized by employers, education institutions and training providers.
